Healthcare is one of the most important industries in our society, and one of the most consequential places to apply AI. In practice, this means supporting clinicians, improving patient outcomes, and helping health systems operate more effectively. While AI has advanced quickly, deploying it in real clinical settings remains a challenge. In fact, 77% of health systems cite immature AI tools as a significant barrier to adoption based on a 2025 study. That’s why Scale is working with Mayo Clinic to develop and deploy AI applications designed to meaningfully improve clinical care.
Driving AI Transformation in Healthcare
The collaboration establishes a framework for AI transformation, focusing on solutions that are reliable, accurate, and helpful. Together, and powered by the Scale Generative AI Platform, we are prioritizing three key areas:
- Streamlining Clinical Processes: Reducing clinician review time of patients' health records before the initial consultation, allowing doctors and nurses to focus on direct care rather than manual documentation. Since launch, doctors are spending an average of eleven more minutes with each patient while reliably maintaining an expert standard of care for patients.
- Enhancing Patient Safety and Quality of Care: Automating the detection of critical safety events, such as wrong-site surgeries or serious falls, hidden within routine reporting noise, reducing administrative manual review.
- Helping Mayo Healthcare Workers Operate at Top of License: Reducing administrative tasks, improving 24/7 patient care, and establishing a scalable foundation for future AI applications.
“Ultimately, this work is about helping patients by using innovation to deliver more timely, coordinated and compassionate care,” said Matthew R. Callstrom, M.D., Ph.D., medical director, AI program at Mayo Clinic. “This collaboration combines each organization’s expertise to advance care delivery and patient experience.”
“Mayo Clinic has been a model for what patient-centered innovation should look like, and it’s why they’re at the forefront of modern healthcare. We’re proud to work alongside their teams to build reliable AI systems that support clinicians and deliver better outcomes for patients.” – Jason Droege, CEO of Scale AI.
Charting a New Path for AI in Healthcare
These initial areas of focus mark important early steps in applying AI to real clinical needs. This work is designed to deliver practical value for clinicians and patients today, while creating a foundation for broader innovation over time. All of this is grounded in privacy and compliance: data remains within Mayo Clinic's secure, HIPAA-compliant environment, and our systems are built from the ground up to meet the highest standards of data security and regulatory oversight. As our efforts evolve, we will continue advancing rigorously evaluated AI systems that support care delivery and improve how the healthcare industry operates.
