From Partnership to Execution: Scale AI Joins the Genesis Mission Consortium

Earlier this year, Scale announced a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in support of the Genesis Mission, a national initiative aimed at accelerating scientific discovery through advanced AI and computing. At the time, we shared what we see as one of the mission’s defining challenges: ensuring that the vast scientific datasets generated across the DOE and America’s National Labs are usable, trusted, and accessible enough to power the next generation of AI-driven discovery.

Today, we’re proud to announce the next step in that partnership. Scale AI has officially joined the Department of Energy's Genesis Mission Consortium, further expanding our role in advancing the Genesis Mission. Consortium membership deepens our engagement from strategic partnership to active technical collaboration, giving Scale a formal seat in the working groups helping shape how the Genesis Mission is operationalized across AI model development and validation, data integration and standards, high-performance computing infrastructure, and robotics.

Building the Foundation for Scientific AI

As the Genesis Mission moves into implementation, the challenge will be operationalizing the data layer that makes advanced AI systems useful in real-world scientific environments.

Across America’s 17 National Labs, researchers generate enormous volumes of high-value scientific data every day. Yet much of that data remains fragmented across independent systems, stored in inconsistent formats, or difficult to access for advanced AI workflows. The challenge is no longer simply generating more data – it’s making existing data reliable, interoperable, secure, and AI-ready. Closing that gap is essential to enabling AI systems scientists can trust for research, experimentation, and discovery.

As a member of the Genesis Mission Consortium, Scale will contribute expertise across several technical areas central to the mission’s success, including:

• Developing GenAI benchmark development and evaluation infrastructure to help measure model performance on domain-specific scientific tasks
• Providing technical expertise to support the consortium’s work on evaluating, deploying, and scaling AI capabilities for scientific research
• Building AI agents for scientific workflows that can help researchers navigate data, automate analysis, and accelerate insight generation
• Supporting computer vision and robotics data pipelines to support emerging physical AI and automation use cases

These capabilities reflect an increasingly important reality for scientific AI: breakthrough models alone are not enough. Scientific AI also requires trusted data, rigorous evaluation, and infrastructure that enables reliable deployment in high-stakes research environments.

Public-Private Collaboration at Scale

The Genesis Mission also reinforces a broader truth about the future of AI innovation. Scientific breakthroughs at this scale will require deep public-private collaboration, combining government research leadership with private-sector expertise in AI infrastructure, evaluation, and deployment.

Scale’s participation in the Genesis Mission Consortium is an opportunity to contribute to that effort in a meaningful way. We look forward to working alongside the Department of Energy, the National Labs, fellow consortium members, and the broader research community to help build the infrastructure necessary to move scientific AI from aspiration to measurable impact.
