Scale AI and Department of Defense Expand Partnership to Advance Army R&D

San Francisco, CA (Aug. 25, 2025) — The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), through the Army Contracting Command at Aberdeen Proving Ground in Adelphi, MD, has awarded Scale AI a $99 million contract to advance research and development services that will accelerate the Army’s adoption of artificial intelligence.
By combining cutting-edge technology with deep mission understanding, Scale is helping the DoD operationalize AI across critical defense mission sets.
“This award builds on Scale AI’s close partnership with the Pentagon and underscores the importance of rapidly adopting AI to strengthen national security,” said Dan Tadross, Head of Public Sector, Scale AI. “We look forward to delivering AI-powered solutions that help give the U.S. military a decisive competitive edge.”
Under the contract, Scale AI will support:
-
Data operations: computer vision data labeling and annotation, generative AI dataset creation, model development and improvement, and testing and evaluation.
-
Platforms and tooling: Scale’s Data Engine, Generative AI Platform, and Donovan.
-
Engineering support: technical expertise to accelerate AI integration across Army missions.
This award continues Scale AI’s expanding collaboration with DoD, which includes a prime contract from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) for Thunderforge, the DoD’s flagship program to leverage AI for U.S. military planning and operations. Scale was also selected by the DoD’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) to advance the Department’s AI capabilities, and supports U.S. Government defense missions through Scale’s AI Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
The agreement reflects Scale AI’s long-term commitment to working hand-in-hand with the Department of Defense to responsibly accelerate AI adoption. By aligning its technology with mission priorities, Scale aims to ensure America’s military remains prepared, resilient, and at the forefront of innovation.
